Lap-band Costs

Lapband costs vary widely through out the United States with some areas as high as $28,000.00 and others as low as 13,000.00 in communities using same day surgery centers. Mexico continues to offer lower cost, viable alternative, for Lapband and weightloss surgery procedures for those whom are un-insured or face specific insurance clauses prohibiting weight loss surgery.

The cost/benefit ratio of Lap-band and weight loss surgery has been clearly demonstrated in numerous published National Institute for Health studies the last several years. Insurance companies however, do not care what the long term health implications or associated future costs related to obesity, they only look at their bottom line for today. This archaic attitude provides an excellent return on investment for their stockholders which are the basis of their business, while condemning the health of their policy holders who are providing the revenue. Insurance conglomerates do not care about long term health conditions that would respond favorably to Lapband or weight loss surgery. The sole purpose for existence of these insurance companies is to generate revenue short term for their investors.

This short term health mentality is forcing many under-insured Americans to look for affordable Lapband and weightloss surgery options outside the U.S. that will fit into their budget. While Lapband costs in the U.S. have decreased some in the past few years, the reason for the lower costs is a lesser standard of service. Many surgeons are working out of low cost free standing same day surgery centers and using nurses to administer fills without fluoroscopy.

As U.S. medical costs continue to spiral upwards, Lapband and weightloss surgery prices will also increase because of the current obesity epidemic. This is opening the door for the medical tourism industry for those who are self pay and there are some very attractive options available outside the U.S. in good hospitals with out cutting corners.

Lapband and weightloss surgery outside the U.S will continue to grow providing adjustment and support centers for foreign patients continue to expand commensurately. Many U.S. Bariatric practices, in an attempt to protect their own economic status are refusing to provide medical services for Lapband patients that had their initial surgery outside the U.S. and in some instances treat these patients rudely as second class citizens.
