Lap-band

LAPBAND
The Allergan Lapband for weight loss was approved by the FDA in the U.S. in June of 2001 after extensive successful use in Mexico ( see

The Johnson & Johnson Realize Band was approved in September of 2007 and while new to the U.S. market, was well established in Mexico and European markets by Obtech, the previous owner. There are several brands of lapbands marketed in Europe that are not approved for use in the U.S. It would be in a patient's best interest to choose a lapband approved for use in the U.S. to insure that appropriate follow-up is available.
Lap Bands have proven to be the least invasive, lowest cost method of weight loss surgery on the market today. The lap band is a good choice for a patient with a BMI under 52 that understands compliance issues related to living with a lap band and is willing and able to meet those criteria. Lapband surgery does require life long follow-up which should be budgeted for when planning your surgery. Patients that are unwilling or unable to return to their original band surgeon or locate band adjustment support close to home may wish to consider another method of weight loss surgery.
Lapbands assist weight loss surgery patients in reaching an early satiation point after a small amount of food when the lap band is correctly placed and adjusted. It is possible however, to eat over your band which makes patient education and compliance essential.
The Lapband is surgically implanted using a laparoscopic technique which expedites the patient's recovery and healing time. On rare occasions, the laparoscopic surgery may be converted to an open surgery.
Use of the lap band (see

) procedure has reduced or eliminated the medications of many diseases such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and elevated cholesterol and eliminated the use of C-pap machines in sleep apnea patients.
The Lapband procedure, when accompanied by daily exercise, positive changes in eating habits and lifestyle, can produce effective, long term weight control resulting in improved health and self esteem.
Weight loss surgery
is a serious decision; you should seek advice from your physician on what type of weight loss surgery would be of the greatest benefit to you and if your PCP is willing or able to provide the support you will need.
